Port of Uwajima
This port started life as a landing place for boats on a section of the moat around Uwajima Castle, which was built in 1601 on the hills overlooking the sea. In recent years, it has been equipped with facilities such as a cargo loading bay and a ferry wharf, in order to accommodate larger ferries to meet a rising demand for sightseeing, and provide necessary equipment for the fishing industry. It now plays an important role as a base for fisheries and mid-distance ferries.

Itsukushima, where the shrine was built, is called Aki no Miyajima (“Miyajima of Aki region”) and is known as one of Japan’s “three beauty spots”. Many tourists, both from inside and outside Japan, visit this place. Hira-butai (a flat stage made of wood on which a play is performed) is one of Japan’s “three beautiful stages”. The other two stages are that of Ishi-butai (stage made of stone) of Shitennouji (Tennouji-ku, Osaka) and that of Ishi-butai of Sumiyoshi-taisha (Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka).
