Takamatsu Port was opened in 1588, built as an internal town harbor at the time of the construction of Takamatsu Castle, which is known as one of the three 'Castles in the Sea' of Japan. Prospering since times of old as a point of contact with regions such as Honshu the remote islands of the Inland Sea, it has played a vital role in linking shipping trade routes between Shikoku and Honshu. Serving as the gateway to Kagawa Prefecture, Takamatsu Port is the nucleus of the region's development, and is a multi-functional port, handling trading, tourism and industry.
