Port of Shimizu

Overlooking by Mt. Fuji, this port is formed by the natural breakwater of the Miho Peninsula. It has a long history, and was designated in the 16th Century as both a strategic military post and a base for marine and overland trading. It was opened as a modern harbor in 1899 and since then has been developing together with the economy of Shizuoka, which it supports through its status as a port of special importance. The volume of cargo that it handles has risen every year, and the size and functions of the harbor have expanded together with the industrialization of the coastal areas, supporting the economy of the entire Central Japan region.

  • World Heritage Sites
Historic Villages in Shirakawa-go and Gokayama
Houses with thatched roofs in the 3 villages, called “Hagi-cho” in Shirakawa-go, and “Aikura” and “Suganuma” in Gokayama, have been registered as World Cultural Heritage Sites. These gassho-zukuri (steep-roofed) houses were first constructed in the Edo period to breed silkworms for silk production on shelves located on the 2nd floor (the attic). As this is a heavy snowfall area, it was necessary to remove snow from the roof in winter. In order to reduce the labor of snow removal and, also, to make a large workspace for breeding silkworms in the attic, the houses were built in a distinctive style with very high, steep roof made of thatch.
