Port of Miyazaki

Facing the Pacific Ocean, Miyazaki Port is a sea gateway to southern Kyushu. From Miyazaki port, other tourist spots scattered across the prefecture are easily accessible with other transport means such as Miyazaki Airport, highways and JR rail lines. On the coastline, you will find beautiful Nichinan Kaigan, also known as “Onino Sentakuita (devil’s washboard)” of Aoshima, while the mountain side is richly endowed with natural beauty such as Ebino Kogen plain in Kirishima-Yaku national park. There are also historic landmarks such as ancient burial tombs and Obi Jokamachi (castle town) where the spirit of the Edo period still lingers on.

Culture

  • Foods
    Miyazaki beef
Miyazaki is Japan’s leading producer of kuroge wagyu (Japanese black cattle). Its juicy and rich flavor has received worldwide acclaim.

  • Local specialties
    Mango
Special efforts are made to keep fully ripened mangos from Miyazaki held up on the stem until they are ready to drop off. This is the secret to their reputation as the best mangos in Japan.

  • Event
Miyazaki Flower Fiesta (mid March through early May)
This is a regular spring event in Miyazaki, though flowers bloom throughout the year. Note that flower festivals take place all over the prefecture.

  • World Heritage Sites
    Yakushima
Miyanoura-dake (1,935 meters), the highest mountain in the Kyushu Region, is in the center of this island, which has a perimeter of 132 kilometers. There are a series of high mountains near Miyanoura-dake and, therefore, this area is called “the Alps on the water”. It is said to rain “35 days a month” here, because this island has very high precipitation. The rainfall on top of the mountain exceeds 10,000 mm annually. In the mountain area, wild animals, such as Yakushima macaque monkeys and Yakushima deer, are unique to this island. Also, old Yakusugi (cedar trees of Yakushima) grow naturally on this island. The “Jomon sugi” is the oldest and largest tree, and is estimated to be over 1,000 years old. The tree’s name of “Jomon” comes from the Jomon Period of Japan’s prehistory. Banyan trees also grow here. Yakushima is the northernmost place for this tree to grow.
