From ancient times right through the Middle Ages, this port has flourished as a trading point with the continent and the Korean Peninsula. Since the opening of the ports in 1868, it has developed as one of Japan's main international trading ports. Joining up the domestic shipping network of every port in western Japan around the Inland Sea, and serving as the gateway to East Asia on the world's main cargo shipping route, it is a stop-off point for liners from over 500 ports in around 130 countries.
