Port of Hagi

Flourishing since ancient times as the gateway to trading with the continent, Hagi Port has been a center for foreign commerce. Since the war, construction on the harbor has made it a point of departure and arrival for passenger routes to the remote islands in the sea surrounding Hagi. In recent years, it has undergone work to make it a base for marine recreation activities, and 4000-ton of passenger boats share the barths for sightseeing ship berths capable of accommodating them. Hagi City in the port's hinterland is home to historical scenery including a castle site and samurai residence, and is famous for Hagiyaki ceramics, a traditional Japanese craft with a history of 400 years.

In the latter half of the 12th century, Taira no Kiyomori (the most powerful lord at that time) built the current shrine. Itsukushima, where the shrine was built, is called Aki no Miyajima (“Miyajima of Aki region”) and is known as one of Japan’s “three beauty spots”. Many tourists, both from inside and outside Japan, visit this place. Hira-butai (a flat stage made of wood on which a play is performed) is one of Japan’s “three beautiful stages”. The other two stages are that of Ishi-butai (stage made of stone) of Shitennouji (Tennouji-ku, Osaka) and that of Ishi-butai of Sumiyoshi-taisha (Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka).
