Port of Beppu

The port of Beppu is located in the western part of Beppu Bay. As a tourist and hot spring resort promoting internationalization, Beppu Port is improving its large-scale passenger wharf as a seaside gateway to the city. The port is very convenient as an access to the famous sightseeing spots of Kyushu, such as the onsens (hot springs), Mt. Aso, the largest caldera volcano in Japan, Usa-jingu Shrine and the Kunisaki peninsula with its many ancient temples. There are now eight berths including the 12 meter-deep Ishigaki Area No.3 wharf for ocean liners and has an extensive passenger and car ferry terminal.
In March 2011, the No. 4 wharf which is the first wharf in Beppu Port exclusively used for cruise ships has come into service.

Miyanoura-dake (1,935 meters), the highest mountain in the Kyushu Region, is in the center of this island, which has a perimeter of 132 kilometers. There are a series of high mountains near Miyanoura-dake and, therefore, this area is called “the Alps on the water”. It is said to rain “35 days a month” here, because this island has very high precipitation. The rainfall on top of the mountain exceeds 10,000 mm annually. In the mountain area, wild animals, such as Yakushima macaque monkeys and Yakushima deer, are unique to this island. Also, old Yakusugi (cedar trees of Yakushima) grow naturally on this island. The “Jomon sugi” is the oldest and largest tree, and is estimated to be over 1,000 years old. The tree’s name of “Jomon” comes from the Jomon Period of Japan’s prehistory. Banyan trees also grow here. Yakushima is the northernmost place for this tree to grow.
