To the southwest of the Japanese archipelago is Okinawa, made up of around 160 islands. Home to people from around 20 countries including America and a variety of Asian countries, the main island of Okinawa has a distinctly exotic feel. It is referred to as the island of entertainment, thanks to its rich culture of singing and dancing, and it plays host to a variety of events and festivals throughout the year. Okinawa enjoys a subtropical ocean climate and idyllic natural scenery, with coral reefs blessed by the warm seas of the Kuroshio Current. It also boasts a wealth of traditional craft treasured since the days of the Ryukyu dynasty, including the sanshin (a traditional three-stringed instrument) and ceramics, as well as historical remains, such as the world heritage sites of the Gusuku (fortress) and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.

Close to the city center, Naha's only beach has white sands and cobalt blue waters, and offers the chance to enjoy marine leisure activities. For an even more exciting experience of the Okinawan sea, we recommend the aquarium, which is home to one of the world's largest water tanks. Other interesting activities include historical tours of the island's many landmarks such as the world heritage-listed Shuri castle, and encounters with Okinawan culture through traditional craft art experience workshops. Also, don't miss the chance to try local delicacies such as Okinawa soba noodles and bitter melon.
Starting off with a visit to world heritage-listed Shuri Castle, take a tour around the cobblestone roads and Tamaudun (historical mausoleum of the Ryukyu kings), before reflecting on the importance of peace at the Peace Memorial Park and old naval underground headquarters. At Tembusu Naha, right in the middle of the busy shopping street Kokusai-dori, you can experience Ryukyu dancing, comedy and craft arts. Just off Kokusai-dori is Yachimun-dori, which is lined with around 20 ceramics workshops and galleries offering great shopping opportunities for earthenware such as Okinawa's emblematic lion statues.

With one of the world’s largest water tanks, Churaumi Aquarium is the pride of Okinawa. Through its giant acrylic panels, you can see such exhibits as the first ever manta ray successfully bred in captivity. Walking a little further will lead you to the indescribable cobalt blue beach within the park’s expansive grounds. After relaxing for a while, visit Bise Fuguki Trees and Nakijin Castle Ruins as World Heritage Site to explore the nature, culture and history of Okinawa.

Starting off from Shurijo Castle, one of World Heritage Sites, enjoy the unique Ryukyu garden of Shikina-en, which was used as the royal family's largest villa. Then take a leisurely stroll along the 2km of natural paths within the enormous 30,000m2 grounds of the Bios on the Hill natural botanical garden. The park is overflowing with flora and fauna, including subtropical forests and beautiful orchids. On your return, you are assured a stimulating time enjoying craft art and savoring Okinawan cuisine at the public market.
